The project team reviewed recreation programming trends across Canada, focusing on those adhering to fundamental guidelines for physical literacy and sport development. The goal was to identify industry best practices and provide actionable recommendations for improved program offerings, ensuring alignment with recognized national standards.
Initially, the team examined the City of Medicine Hat's current program mix, participation trends, and facility usage to establish the current state. They then investigated existing recreation program service providers in the City of Medicine Hat area to understand the full extent of recreational program offerings available to residents. Municipalities offering a high volume of programs that adhere to the fundamental guidelines for physical literacy and sport development were also investigated. A cross-section of municipalities with varying service delivery models was further examined to highlight the advantages and disadvantages associated with each methodology.
The final report provided actionable recommendations for recreation programming to improve physical literacy outcomes, enhance participant engagement, and ensure long-term sustainability.
